RADAR ANALYSIS AND SPOTTER REPORTS

2308z (6:08pm CDT) Tornadic circulation begins developing in the storm.

AT 6:14 PM CDT...STORM SPOTTERS AND DOPPLER RADAR OBSERVED A TORNADO. THIS TORNADO WAS LOCATED JUST SOUTH OF RICHLAND HILLS OR NEAR LOOP 820 EAST AND I-30...MOVING NORTHEAST AT 30 MPH.

2317z (6:17pm CDT)

AT 620 PM CDT...STORM SPOTTERS AND DOPPLER RADAR OBSERVED A TORNADO. THIS TORNADO WAS LOCATED NEAR HURST...RICHLAND HILLS...AND SOUTHERN HALTOM CITY...AND WAS MOVING NORTHEAST AT 30 MPH.

2322z (6:22pm CDT)

AT 638 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS WERE MONITORING A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WITH A HISTORY OF PRODUCING ONE OR MORE TORNADOES. STRONG ROTATION IS LOCATED OVER IRVING...MOVING EAST AT 40 MPH.

2342z (6:42pm CDT) Strong rotation directly over Downtown Dallas. Notice the zoomed out image where the boundary out ahead of the main line arcs back into the tornadic storm.

2347z (6:47pm CDT) Rotation appears to weaken a tad, but the downtown skyscrapers are directly between the rotation and the data site. I wonder if this partially blocks/scatters the radar beam as you can see in the velocity images above. Or it could be there is no precip there to return data. I dunno.

2351z (6:51pm CDT) Some wierd stuff going in the velocity image south of I-30 out along the edge of the storm. I believe this to be a rapidly developing new tornadic circulation that we see in the following frames. But, the main tornadic circulation is still along I-30 just east of downtown. Thank goodness this wasn't a tornado churning along I-30 tossing around the thousands of cars stuck in rush hour traffic.

AT 652 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS WERE MONITORING A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WITH A HISTORY OF PRODUCING ONE OR MORE TORNADOES. STRONG ROTATION WAS LOCATED NEAR AND JUST EAST OF DOWNTOWN DALLAS....MOVING EAST AT 35 MPH ALONG I-30.

AT 655 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS AND DOPPLER RADAR OBSERVED A DEVELOPING TORNADO 13 MILES WEST OF HEATH...OR ABOUT NEAR GARLAND...MOVING EAST AT 40 MPH.

2356z (6:56pm CDT) Now the new large circulation is quite apparent approaching northern Mesquite. The strong outbound return (bright red) is perhaps a very strong RFD blast. So, we have two different circulations with the old one just north of I-30. Occlusion and new tornadogenesis?

SRV1

0001z (7:01pm CDT) Now the older circulation intensifies as the new one dissipates....but not before a funnel cloud is reported with it at about this time over northern Mesquite where you see the smaller couplet. Could it have been anticyclonic? The couplet certainly would suggest that. Very interesting.

AT 704 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS WERE MONITORING A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WITH A HISTORY OF PRODUCING ONE OR MORE TORNADOES. TRAINED WEATHER SPOTTERS ARE REPORTING A FUNNEL CLOUD WITH THIS STORM NEAR THE NORTHERN PART OF THE CITY OF MESQUITE

0006z (7:06pm CDT) The main circulation along I-30 intensifies while a couple of circulations are indicated down across I-20 both cyclonic and anticyclonic...quite possibly the nise of strong RFD which would explain the upcoming sequence of events. The storm starts to transition into a "comma head" tornadic supercell.

0030z (7:30pm CDT) One of th most interesting radar images I've seen. The "comma head" is now quite apparent along I-30. this storm is spinning like a top....esepcially with the SRV2 image. Notice the boundary curling out of it.
